Summer at Concord College (UK) - Laura’s diary

Our student Laura is studying at Concord College this summer.
Laura is writing a diary and she is happy to share her impressions with you. So, let’s start …

Monday July,4
Hi to everyone !!!My name's Laura and I'm a Summer School student at Concord College in Shropshire, England. This is an international boarding school with more than 65 years experience. I'm here for 26 days in July to do a special course in Chemistry and Physics as well as improve my English skills, see something of Britain and make friends with young people from different corners of the world.

Tuesday July,5
Hi from Laura! This is my first day at Concord College. I did two special Chemistry and Physics entrance tests in the morning which were not so easy. It took me 40 minutes to complete. Before that we had an assembly, where they explained everything we need to know. We were given these nice presents, which made us feel welcome at the College. We were also given an ID card, as well as, two keys-one to lock and open a door in a room we live and the second one from a safe. By the way, every student on campus lives in their own room. Well, here you can see an example of my room which has a bathroom, too!

Wednesday July,6
Today I had a Chemistry class. As you see, I'm wearing a lab coat and a pair of googles. This is a must when it comes to doing experiments. As you can see we had our first practice in Chemistry with Mr Badmus! After the classes me and my friend went to the gym which is open from 4pm till 6:30pm. This is me enjoying a running machine. It's great fun and also helps your body to stay fit!

Thursday July,7
Here's our programme, which can be also seen on a special noticeboard in the main building. It looks like a timetable of all our activities. There are sports, discos, assemblies, excursions and extras. Each student was given this timetable. In case you forget something, you can always have a look.

Friday July,8
We had Science classes in the morning and a half-day trip to Shrewsbury. It's about 25 minutes’ drive from the College. We went there by coach. Most of the staff went together with us. Shrewsbury is a nice English town with a pedestrian area and quite a big shopping centre. In Shrewsbury you can certainly find all the presents for all your relatives!

Saturday July,9
Today we visited Chester, which is originally a Roman fortress from the 1st century A.D. It's about an hour and a half drive from the College. We went walking down the streets with their marvelous houses made of the local sandstone and took loads of photos of this ancient city. We also had some time for shopping and exploring the place. We had about 5 hours of free time there, so we could see the place and do our shopping.

Tuesday July,12
Are you interested in what is happening while we are studying Physics? Here we are! Yesterday we had one class of theory and the last class was PRACTICE!!! We did 4 different experiments on free-fall. All the data we got, we put into a computer to make a graph. This was really informative for us!
By the way, some time ago I decided to go to Concord's inside swimming pool! I went there with some girls, we had a great time while we were swimming and diving! The water inside the pool was quite warm and you couldn’t get frozen after the activity!!

Saturday July,16
On the second Saturday of our Summer School we had a full day trip to the city of Oxford! We woke up at 6:45am and had breakfast in the College canteen. We set off at about 8:00am. We couldn't wait to arrive at this wonderful place full of medieval buildings and 38 colleges which form one of the oldest universities in the world. What could be more exciting than that? Some of us visited  museums, some  went shopping and some just stayed  in the park near Merton College.Me and my friends from Turkey, Italy and Kazakhstan spent our time walking down the streets and admiring every building! Here are some photos!

Monday July,18
Hello from England again!!!! Have I told you about our free time in Concord? Do you want to know what we do after classes and in the evenings?
We never get bored! There are so many things to do during the day! In the afternoon we can play volleyball, table tennis, football and golf. We can go bush crafting, canoeing, horse riding and more! No one here sits alone! In a place called West End there is a shop where you can buy some snacks and fast food too. In West End you can use computers as well as play table football with your friends! We also have discos in the evenings every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. Moreover, here you have an opportunity to enjoy your free time with your teacher! As for my experience, I never played against a person who teaches me before.

Tuesday July,19

I must admit that food at Concord College is marvelous! On their menu there are at least 4 kinds of meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, creamy soups, snacks and delicious desserts! You can't even imagine how much I love the desserts at Concord!!! All these cheese-cakes, waffles, cakes, muffins, cookies are simply unbelievable! Thanks to their chef you can taste a huge variety of jummy dishes. So it's worth coming to Concord to enjoy them all!

Saturday July,23

Yesterday we had an amazing talent show event where all students could demonstrate what they could do and what they were talented at! Without doubt all the performances were rehearsed several times beforehand. The participants of the show sang their favourite songs, danced, played the guitar and the piano, told a story from a Harry Potter movie called "Deathy Hallows". Some students even formed a band to play music for the audience. The talent show was so inspiring for everybody! Thanks to Concord College for this lovely opportunity!

Sunday July,24
Since my arrival at Concord I have been mostly telling you about our activities and having fun in free time. What about knowledge we get here? It's not only theoretical stuff but also a lot of practice included, which I personally have never had before I came here and joined my Science course. At Concord College we have fantastic classes with professional teachers. We have already done so many  experiments. We have worked with lasers, sound waves, dangerous chemicals and gases. I believe it's necessary in all sciences because you can't study things without seeing how they work in reality. I'm sure it's a wonderful experience and I will certainly never forget it!

Monday July,25

On Saturday we had an amazing day here at Concord! We played a lot of open-air games like tug of war, football, basketball and ran relays. Next to the main building there was a place for the students to draw. The College had a lot of visitors  on the day. My friends and me enjoyed  it all, bought ice cream and took silly pictures for fun. Here are some of them!

Tuesday July,26
On Sunday we went to the capital of Great Britain-London! It's  a vibrant city with lots of tourists! It takes about 4 hours to get to London from Concord College. The bus driver dropped us off near Oxford street and we went shopping and walking! The city was very busy, so we needed to be careful! The weather was ok. It wasn't sunny, but also it wasn't rainy. Some of the students decided to see the main sights but the majority simply went to the shops to spend the rest of their pocket money.  As you can see in the photos, the traffic in Oxford street is quite busy, too. London was our last city during the course. We enjoyed London as for many students it had been a dream destination.

Well, I have finished my course at Concord College! It was a wonderful opportunity for me and other students, who came from all over the world to join their fantastic Summer School. At the end of the course we were given Certificates for our hard work. Some of the students including myself got a special award. Moreover, to keep our memories alive we were presented a huge course photograph with all our teachers, numerous friends and staff members. To sum this up, I would like to say thank you to Concord College for all their efforts to make us feel happy and welcome. They really did their best so that our stay would be unforgettable!
